Just north or Whangarei, on the northern side of SH1 (Hikurangi), lies the fascinating Waro Limestone Reserve walkway. If you park in the reserve entrance off King St, you can follow an easy 2.2km walkway, which includes the perimeter of a small lake and the main Waro limestone formations. Alternatively park in the carpark on SH1 adjacent to “The Rock Man” and circumnavigate only the rocks (takes around 20 minutes). Don’t forget your camera because the Waro Limestone Scenic Reserve has plenty to snap at.
