About 40 mins North of Lupton Lodge on the east coast of Northland is the stunning setting for the Helena Bay Cafe and Gallery. The cafe has a delicious fresh menu which changes regularly and is open from 10am-4pm Mon-Fri and 10am-5pm in the weekends. You can sit in the glass conservatory at the back surrounded by native bush and attractive artwork, or enjoy the covered deck at the front overlooking the coast and forest towards the Pacific Ocean.
The Helena Bay Gallery has arguably the finest selection of Northland art and crafts anywhere in the country. There is pottery, glassware, jewellery, paintings, sculptures, metalwork, wooden furniture, garden & outside art and much much more. They have also carefully selected art from outside Northland that is in keeping with their unique and high quality range.
The Cafe & Gallery complex is surrounded by landscaped gardens that you can wander around at your leisure to complete the visit. This is a highly recommended inclusion for any trip along the Old Russell Road between the Bay of Islands and Whangarei. Turn off SH1 towards Oakura if you are heading North or drive down the Old Russell Road from the Russell peninsula if you are heading south. Helena Bay Cafe is about 15 minutes drive from State Hightway 1.
The drive along the Old Russell Road is incredibly beautiful if you have the time and don’t mind windy roads. There are deserted bays, native bush and unobstructed sea views by the dozen.
