Most people drive to Whangarei via Auckland. It takes 2 hours from Auckland city (or around 2.5 hours from Auckland Airport) to get to Lupton Lodge. Book your rental car for pickup in Auckland (directions from Auckland Airport). Alternatively you can take a domestic flight to Whangarei from Auckland or Wellington, or take a bus to Whangarei from Auckland CBD and rent a car when you reach Whangarei.

Directions to Lupton Lodge
From SH1 (from South)
Follow State Highway 1 all the way through Whangarei. 1.5km after Kensington Avenue (Kensington Stadium) you will drive over railway tracks. After 400m turn right at the Puna Rere Drive traffic lights (sign posted Tikipunga/Tutukaka Coast). Continue driving straight ahead for 2 minutes, going straight ahead through 2 roundabouts. Lupton Lodge is 6km after the 2nd roundabout (2.5km after Huanui Orchards). We are on the left-hand side and have a white sign. If you reach Rockingham Road on your left you have gone 100m too far.
From SH1 (from North)
Follow State Highway 1 towards Whangarei until the first set of traffic lights (Puna Rere Drive) – turn left at the traffic lights and continue straight ahead for 2 minutes. Go straight ahead through 2 roundabouts, following signs to the Tutukaka Coast. Lupton Lodge is 6km after the 2nd roundabout (2.5km after Huanui Orchards). We are on the left-hand side and have a white sign. If you reach Rockingham Road on your left you have gone 100m too far.
From Tutukaka
Follow the road towards Whangarei. Lupton Lodge is 15 mins drive from Tutukaka (13.5km from Ngunguru). We are on the right-hand side and have a white sign – about 200m after the Orange Market. If you reach Pukepoto Orchards you have gone about 200m too far.
From Whangarei Town Basin (approx. 12 mins)
Follow Hatea Drive (adjacent to the Town Basin parking area) North keeping the river on your right-hand side (sign-posted towards Tutukaka Coast). Go up the hill then turn right at the first set of traffic lights. Turn right at the first roundabout. Lupton Lodge is 6km after the roundabout & 2.5km after Huanui Orchards on the main road to the Tutukaka Coast. We are on the left hand side and have a white sign. If you reach Rockingham Road on your left you have gone 100m too far.
From Whangarei City Centre (Bank Street – approx. 10 mins)
Follow Bank Street north (up hill) out of town. At the traffic lights next to New World go straight ahead (middle lane, taking the right fork). Continue straight through the second set of lights. Turn right at the first round about. Lupton Lodge is 6km after the round about & 2.5km after Huanui Orchards on the main road to the Tutukaka Coast. We are on the left hand side and have a white sign . If you reach Rockingham Road on your left you have gone 100m too far.
From Whangarei Airport (approx. 20 mins)
Turn right out of the airport complex. Follow the road to Whangarei City Centre. (about a 10 minute drive) Turn right at a major set of traffic lights, after crossing the main bridge by the Town Basin. Follow that road (Hatea Drive). Turn right at the first set of traffic lights. Turn right at the first roundabout. Lupton Lodge is 6km after the roundabout & 2.5km after Huanui Orchards on the main road to the Tutukaka Coast. We are on the left hand side and have a white sign. If you reach Rockingham Road on your left you have gone 100m too far.
Northern Gateway Toll Road Information
There are 3 possible routes into Northland
- The tunnel/motorway road (one-way toll of $2.40 for cars)
- The free route along Hibiscus Coast
- State Highway 16 through Helensville
We recommend the new toll road if you want to make your journey faster and easier. The toll is calculated electronically so either pay in advance or within 3 days of using the toll road.
